How Thick is My Metal Sign? Understanding Steel Gauges
One of the most common questions we get at Nightingale Metal Design is about the thickness of our signs. In an industry where many products are made of thin, flimsy aluminum or "tin," we pride ourselves on using high-quality, heavy-duty American steel. But what does "16-gauge" actually mean for your home decor?
The Gold Standard: 16-Gauge American Steel
Most of our personalized signs and wall art are crafted from 16-gauge carbon steel. To help you visualize that, 16-gauge steel is approximately 1/16th of an inch thick (about the thickness of a U.S. quarter).
This is the "Sweet Spot" for metal art for three reasons:
- Durability: It won't bend, warp, or sag over time, even in outdoor environments.
- Hang-ability: It has a substantial "heft" and quality feel without being so heavy that it requires specialized mounting.
- Precision: It is the ideal thickness for our Fiber Laser to cut intricate details (like the delicate leaves on our Tree of Life) with surgically clean edges.
Gauge Thickness Explained
In the metal industry, "Gauge" can be a bit confusing because the higher the number, the thinner the metal. Here is a quick breakdown of the materials we use in our Exton, PA studio:
- 16 Gauge (~1.5mm): Our standard for most wall signs. Sturdy and elegant.
- 14 Gauge (~1.9mm): Slightly thicker, used for larger pieces or signs that require extra structural rigidity.
- 11 Gauge (~3.0mm): Roughly 1/8th of an inch thick. We use this for heavy-duty industrial signs or large outdoor installations.
Which Thickness is Best for You?
You don’t have to be an engineer to choose the right sign. We have carefully selected the ideal gauge for every product in our shop based on its size and intended use. Whether it's a small Stock Sign for your office or a massive Custom Logo for your business, we match the steel to the design.
Every piece is finished with our industrial-grade powder coating, which adds a final layer of protection and a beautiful, consistent texture.
